IBADAN—THE Trenchard Tank, a
grouping of intellectuals in Ibadan, has thrown its weight behind former Niger
Delta militant leader, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, a.k.a Tompolo, while
calling on the President Buhari-led administration to “soft-pedal on its
grievances against Tompolo.”
Addressing newsmen, on Wednesday,
in Ibadan, the group through its spokesman, Damilola Alade, claimed that “what
the present All Progressive Congress, APC, administration is doing amounts to
taking us back to the dark and lawless era of 1983-84 when the rule of law, decency,
decorum and civilized practices were thrown over-board in a clueless and
condemnable exercise in populism which almost destroyed our nation.
“The present administration must
be reminded that it is a beneficiary of the democracy that others fought for and
that it is in no way entitled to destroy it with a Stone Age ethos of disregard
for the rule of law, making one man a demigod,” the group said.
Asserting that “our nation is
currently facing an economic threat of existential proportions,” the group claimed
that “the only crime Tompolo has committed is to remain noble and steadfast by
standing by the icon and father of genuine democracy in Nigeria, President
Jonathan, against those who sought to use him as a willing tool in rigging the
elections in Bayelsa.”
“The APC should leave Tompolo
alone and put on its thinking cap for the purpose of forging a way forward for
our nation.
